Ernestine Elizabeth Nowlan

Ernestine Elizabeth Nowlan, 92, of Topeka, passed away on Monday, December 24, 2007 at her home. She was born on June 8, 1915 in Goff, KS, the daughter of Armour and Minnie Hall Lynde. She graduated from Highland Park High School in 1933 and married William Burdette Nowlan on May 27, 1936. They were married for 70 years. Ernestine worked for Arthur Capper, Kansas Farmer's Union, Sewell Oil, and Cla-Mar Carpet as a bookkeeper. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Topeka. She enjoyed being a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader and serving on the Tecumseh Grade School PTA board. She was active in the Highland Park High School Alumni Assoc. and the Tecumseh Garden Club. She completed the Menninger Bible Course and hosted many Stonecroft Friendship Bible Coffees. She faithfully supported in her life and established support to continue after her death for her favorite charities: World Vision, American Red Cross, International Children's Fund, Salvation Army, Topeka Rescue Mission, America's Second Harvest, Hospitalized Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and HELP Hospitalized Veterans. She was preceded in death by her husband, three brothers, and one sister. She is survived by a son, Robert Nowlan and wife, Peggy; two daughters, Alice Payne and her husband, Clarence; Betty Arnold and her husband, Mark; seven grandchildren, Christopher Payne, Leatha Hall, Matthew Payne, Courtney Nowlan, James Fowler, Laura Hurla, and Robbie Fowler, one step-grandson, Drew Arnold and nine great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. Ernestine will lie in state after Noon Thursday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday evening. The family wishes memorial contributions to be given in her name to any of her favorite charities listed above and sent in care of Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, 1321 S.W. 10th Ave., Topeka, KS 66604.
