Ernest Monthey, 88, of Topeka, passed away, Saturday, December 18, 2004 at Stormont-Vail Hospital.
He was born October 13, 1916 at Olpe, KS the son of Fred and Ella Monthey. He was a 1934 graduate of Topeka High School and graduate of the Southern Police Institute, Louisville, KY.
Mr. Monthey was a military veteran serving in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII with the 464th Bomb Group based in Italy. He flew 33 bombing missions and was awarded the Purple Heart and Silver Star.
He retired in 1973 as Detective Major of the Topeka Police Department following 27 years of service. Prior to his Law Enforcement Career he had worked for John Morrell Meat Packing.
Mr. Monthey was a member of First Lutheran Church, Fraternal Order of Police, Philip Billard Post #1650 V.F.W., Capitol Post #1 American Legion, Lodge #555 Loyal Order of the Moose and the Peace Officers Association.
On November 4,1939, in Kansas City, Missouri he married Leola "Jimmy" James. She preceded him in death July 18, 2002. His greatest career was their 63 years of marriage. Survivors include one son Steven F. Monthey, Concord, OH; two grandchildren Michael E. Monthey and Michele M. Harwood; one great grandchild B.J. Harwood and other loving family and friends.
Funeral services will be held 9:00 am Wednesday, December 22, 2004 at the Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Mr. Monthey will lie in state after 12:00 noon Tuesday at the funeral home where the family will greet friends from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Tuesday.
