Emmy Lou Milner Johnson Thorp passed away on March 4, 2018. She was 87 years old.

Emmy Lou was born to Guy and Hazel (Baughan) Milner on September 28, 1931, in Republic County, Kansas.

She attended Belleville High School and graduated from Salina High School in 1948. Emmy Lou received a BA in education at Washburn University in 1974 and received her MS in special education at Kansas State University in 1976. She started the learning disability program in Valley Heights schools and later taught special education for 20 years in the Auburn-Washburn school district before retiring in 1994.

Emmy Lou married Joe Dell Johnson of Salina, Kansas on April 6, 1950. He passed on June 8, 1977. They have four children. She married Russel L. Thorp of Topeka on June 20, 1987. He passed on December 1, 2001.

She was also preceded in death by her father, mother, and sister, C.B. Knowles.

She is survived by her children, Douglass (Becky) Johnson, Hot Springs Village, Arkansas; Jeanne (Steve) Kelly, Topeka, Kansas; Jo Delle (Jim) Ball, Belleville, Kansas; and Debi (John) Schrock, Topeka, Kansas; ten grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and her sister Ann Willard, Las Vegas, Nevada.

Before her death Emmy Lou was a member of the Westside Christian Church, Friends of the Library, Daughters of American Revolutions, Daughters of 1812 and Daughters of the Colonies. She was an active volunteer at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library, Kansas History Museum and Everywoman's Resource Center. She belonged to many education organizations while teaching and served as an officer in many of the organizations. She enjoyed traveling, reading and playing Bridge and Bunko with family and friends.

Memorial service will be held at West Side Christian Church 432 SW Lindenwood Ave. Topeka KS 66606 on Thursday, March 8 at 10 am. A private inurnment will be held at a later date.
