Emma L. Sheeley, 88, of Topeka, passed away, Friday July 22, 2011. She was born September 7, 1922, to Abbott Carman and Ethel Hedley Taylor on their farm near Graysville Manitoba, Canada. She married John W. Sheeley on September 1, 1948, at her parents' farm. They first lived at Black Jack, Kansas and later settled in Ottawa, Kansas. Emma worked as a clerk at various grocery stores in Ottawa. She worked for a short time at Ottawa Truck, where she built trucks in the factory. She also enjoyed a short career cooking in a kitchen that sent out Meals on Wheels. She retired in 1987 and looked after Leo Kirkwood from the age of 95 until he passed away at 102. In 2002, she moved to Topeka to be closer to her daughter, Dorothy.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church at Ottawa and the Hope Society of the church. She was also a member of the Merry-Go-Round Club.
Emma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John, her brothers, Frank and Hedley and her sisters, Olive, Mary and Esther. She is survived by her daughter Dorothy (Herb) Seel, her sister, Ethel Dracass, and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral ceremony will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at the Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to service. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Baldwin, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be given to Grace Hospice.
