Emma "Marie" Naill, passed away on March 2, 2008. Marie was born October 27, 1916 in Shawnee County to James A. and Marie A. (Killinger) Shumate. They and her brother Laverne J. Shumate and sister Katherine L. Shumate preceded her in death. She married Harold E. Naill on June 7, 1941 and they had a daughter, Janis Marie. Both preceded her in death.
Marie graduated from Topeka High School and Washburn University with a BS in education. She taught school at Quenemo and Ada High Schools. After moving back to Topeka in the late 1940's, she became a member of First Congregational Church. She was also a member of the American Association of University Women and its' project, the Topeka Language Bank, Phi Kappa Phi, Nonoso, and the Washburn Women's Honor Society. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a tour guide at the Kansas Historical Museum.
Many cousins in Kansas and elsewhere survive her. Memorial contributions may be given to First Congregational Church, 1701 SW Collins Ave., Topeka 66604 or Midland Hospice, 200 SW Frazier, Topeka, 66606-2800.
