Emlin E. North, Jr.

Emlin E. North Jr., 81, passed away on Wednesday, July 29, 2009 at a local hospital. Emlin was born in Atchison, the son of Emlin E. and Evelyn S. (Snyder) North. He grew up on a farm in the Lancaster area, graduated from Atchison County Community High School, and later from the University of Kansas. Following graduation Emlin enlisted in the U. S. Air Force.

He worked for Standard Oil Company of Indiana while living in Chicago, IL. Upon his return to Topeka, Emlin was the Executive Secretary for the Republican State Committee. Later he was employed by the Menninger Foundation as Director of Development, a position he held until his retirement after 35 years of service.

Emlin was a reader for the Audio Reader Services in Lawrence. He and his wife were long time active members of Grace Episcopal Cathedral. He was an early member of the Topeka Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. He served as Chairman of the Board for the Topeka Public Library and was past president of the Topeka 20/30 Club. Emlin was an avid golfer and reader. He was a member in several clubs including the Lincoln Club, Topeka Jayhawk Club, Topeka Magic Club, and The Kite Flyers Club. He was an enthusiastic supporter of the Topeka Jazz Workshop.

Emlin married Jean Tallant in December of 1952 in Bartlesville OK. She survives. Other survivors include daughter Anne (William) Kidder, Overland Park; son Robert (Brenda) North, Topeka; grandchildren Sarah and Margaret Kidder, Alexander and Aliyah North.

Memorial Services will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday August 3, 2009 at Grace Episcopal Cathedral. Inurnment will follow in the Chapel of the Resurrection Columbarium.
