Elsie Mae Schmidt

Elsie Mae Schmidt passed away on October 9, 2020, at Oakley Place in Topeka, Kansas. Elsie, the eldest of three children, was born on March 13, 1935 in Meade, Kansas to Pete and Minnie (Regier) Thiessen.
After her family moved to McPherson, Kansas, Elsie worked at Duckwalls' department store after high school. Later, she was an Avon Lady while raising her four children.
Elsie married Allen D. Schmidt on December 10, 1955 in Fairbury, NE and they celebrated 62 years of marriage. In 1970 the family moved to Topeka.
Elsie worked in the Shawnee County Treasurer's office for 18 years, retiring in 1997 during a bomb scare which evacuated the building.
Elsie was a lifetime Auxiliary member of American Legion Post #400 and VFW Post #1650. She enjoyed square dancing, card playing and world- wide travel with her husband. She was a great seamstress and embroiderer, making clothing for the entire family and creating many quilts, pillows, and decorative items. She loved collecting antiques, glassware, crayons, marbles and anything elephant. She adopted several horses from the South Dakota Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary. Elsie loved all animals, especially, her cat, Golden. She also enjoyed KU sports, Kansas City Royals and Chiefs. Meals she was best loved for included liver and onions, scalloped potatoes, angel food cake, meat loaf, potato soup, calico beans and any specialty cakes.
Elsie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Allen; and her sister, Bernice Perkins. She is survived by her brother, Donald (Mary Ann) Thiessen; three daughters, Debra Hepp, Deana (Larry) Jackson and Angela Schmidt; son, Gregory Schmidt; four grandchildren and four great- grandchildren.
A Graveside Service will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at the Mount Hope Cemetery, 4700 SW 17th Street, Topeka. The family will receive guests thirty minutes prior to the service to say their final goodbyes. Masks will be required along with social distancing. Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's choice.
