Elsie Mildred (Small) Ross, 86, of Topeka, passed away, Wednesday, December 3, 2008 surrounded by her loving family.
Elsie was born February 1, 1922 on the family farm near Willis, Kansas. She was the fourth child of Carmen and Mary (Denton) Small. Elsie was a 1941 graduate of Willis High School.
Elsie married Donald B. Ross June 26, 1942 at the First Baptist Church in Horton, Kansas. They resided in many Northeast Kansas communities coming to Topeka in 1953.
Early in her career she worked as a seamstress. Mrs. Ross retired from Security Benefit Life following 25 years of service. Elsie was a member of the KanKan Chapter of the ABWA and was named Woman of the Year in 1976.
She and Don greatly enjoyed traveling and camping. They were members of the Good Sam's Camping Club.
Elsie was a member of the Berean Sunday School Class at the FirstBaptistChurch in Topeka for more than 50 years. She participated in many church activities and sang in the Chancel Choir approximately 45 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband Don in 1999; her daughter Kathy Anderson October 13, 2008; and her siblings Hazel Stahl, Raymond Small, Verna Schesser and Gladys Gaskell. Surviving family includes daughter, Kandy Lehmann, Topeka; son, Kim Ross, Holton, KS; eight grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Ross will lie in state after 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel where the family will greet friends from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. that evening. Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the First Baptist Church, Topeka. Graveside services will follow at 4:00 p.m. near the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Everest, Kansas.
