Elmer J. Burris, Jr.

December 14, 1931 — October 22, 2020

Elmer J. Burris, Jr. was born to John and Eva Burris near McCune, Kansas on Dec. 14, 1931.

He attended several country schools before moving to Parsons, Kansas in 1941. There he attended grade school and graduated from Parsons High School in 1950. He married Dorothy Huff on December 26th of that year.

He served two years with the 930th Ord Ammo Co. and went to Korea in 1951. Upon release from service he worked for Douglas Aircraft in Tulsa, Oklahoma for seven years. Getting laid off he returned to Kansas and went to work for the Kansas State Grain Department in Topeka, Kansas. He obtained a Grain Inspectors license and was transferred to Newton, Kansas for ten years. He was then transferred back to Topeka, Kansas as Inspector-in-charge until he retired in 1993.

Elmer and Dorothy were past member of TopKan Square Dance club in Topeka and Circle Eight club in Newton, Kansas.

Upon retiring he done woodworking for about six years and then started working on computers. Teaching and repairing them.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, EvaBelle Culbertson, Patsy May Shears and Rosetta Furnas; a brother-in-law, Doyle Huff of Tulsa, Oklahoma and a grandson Bradley Schnacker.

Survivors include wife Dorothy; two sons, Stephen of Topeka, William of Kansas City, Kansas; three daughters, Melinda (Larry Hinton) Sneary, Raelane (Lonnie) Schnacker, and Carol Burris, all of Topeka; four grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchild; a brother, David Leon Burris and sister-in-law, Mary Ann.

Honoring Elmer's request, cremation is planned. A memorial ceremony will be held at 10:00 am, Thursday, October 29, 2020 at Mount Hope Cemetery, 4700 SW 17th Street, Topeka, KS 66604. Interment will follow. Penwell-Gabel Cremations, Funerals and Receptions, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka, KS 66604 is assisting the family.
