Elizabeth Horton

Elizabeth Marshall Horton, 84, of Topeka, passed away on Saturday, September 3, 2005 at Aldersgate Village.

She was born March 23, 1921 in Wichita, the daughter of George H. and Clara Weston Carpenter Marshall.

Liz spent her early childhood in Augusta, where her father was Superintendent of Schools. Her father accepted a position as Superintendent of Schools in Ottawa, where she attended middle school and high school. She attended Ottawa University for two years and graduated from the University of Kansas in 1942.

Liz taught school in Tonganoxie for one year and subsequently worked for Trans World Airlines in Kansas City for a year.

She married Raymond Keith Horton on July 8, 1944. The Hortons lived in Prairie Village for 52 years, where Liz was a homemaker and mother of two children.

Liz was a member of The Village Presbyterian Church of Prairie Village and participated in many church activities, including a mission activity at John Calvin Presbyterian Church of Kansas City where she organized a Golden Age Club and a weekday Church School. She also taught third grade Sunday School.

Liz was a charter member of the Chapter GP of P.E.O., wrote a byline column for The Independent in Kansas City, and was a member of the Belinder School PTA. She was a regular member of a bridge group that played together for 50 years. She loved gardening and spent many ours in genealogical research, amassing a large collection of family memorabilia.

She leaves her husband, Raymond Keith Horton; two daughters, Mary Suzanne Lott of Jacksonville, Florida, and Anne Horton Pettavel of Topeka, three grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private family gathering will take place on Saturday, September 10, 2005 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, followed by burial at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence. The family will join friends at a Memorial Service at Aldersgate Village at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 15, 2005.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Aldersgate Village Good Samaritan Fund, 7220 SW Asbury Drive, Topeka, Kansas 66614.
