Elizabeth Virginia "Betty" Fouts, 93, of Topeka, passed away Monday, January 8, 2018 in her home.
She was born September 21, 1924, in Scranton, Kansas, the daughter of Richard and Mary Elizabeth "Mae" Martin Challacombe. She was a graduate of Scranton High School.
Betty was employed by the Leavenworth Library, Leavenworth, Kansas and later by the Shawnee County and Topeka Library, retiring in 1988.
She was a member of Assembly of God churches, where she served in various capacities including; President of the women's group, Sunday school teacher, served funeral dinners, and made phone calls for the prayer chain, among other duties. Betty was also a foster parent to several kids.
Betty married Alan Loyd Fouts on June 15, 1946 in Topeka, Kansas. He preceded her in death on July 24, 1975. Survivors include three children, Barbara (Santos "Andy") Saldivar, Aleen (Daniel) Halbett and John Fouts, all of Topeka; six grandchildren, Kathleen, Misti, Daniel J. II, Christine, James, Kenneth; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert Challacombe of Littleton, CO and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Esther and Laura Challacombe; and two brothers, Sidney and Harold Challacombe.
Betty was an avid gardener, loved reading animal stories and biographies and listening to David Jeremiah and Gospel music. She enjoyed quilting; making every family member a quilt.
A funeral ceremony will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 15, 2018 at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka. Interment will follow at Harveyville Cemetery, Harveyville, Kansas. The family will greet friends from 2:00-4:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 14, 2018 at the funeral home.
