Elizabeth Anne Beary Purkey, 42, of Topeka, died unexpectedly at her home in Topeka on January 6, 2014.
She was born in Edina, Minnesota on November 30, 1971. Elizabeth moved to Overland Park, KS with her family in 1978. As a child, Elizabeth enjoyed singing and playing tennis.
She attended Saint Thomas Aquinas High School where she played tennis, danced on the Drill Team, and was a member of the Quiz Bowl Team.
Elizabeth graduated from Saint Thomas Aquinas in 1990 and left for Texas to attend SMU for a semester on scholarship.
In 1991, she transferred to the University of Kansas where she completed her Bachelors in Journalism in 1994. She was an active member in the Sigma Kappa Sorority. Elizabeth loved living in Lawrence and continued to go to school at KU where she received her MBA and Law Degree in 1998.
She worked in the Kansas City area before moving to Topeka in 2001 and starting up her own law practice.
Elizabeth's life changed eight years ago when she met Richard Purkey of Topeka. After spending eight years as a student and a few years building a law practice she had met someone to spend her life with. You knew she was happy because she always had a smile on her face. Elizabeth and Rich wed on August 7, 2011 in a beachside ceremony in Aruba.
With her new family she loved vacationing in Cabo, spending time with Krysten and Patrick, and talking about her nieces and nephews.
Over the past few years when not in the office, Elizabeth found comfort in the garden growing her fruits and vegetables and spending time at the family cabin in Maple Hill.
Survivors include her husband, Richard Purkey, daughter, Krysten, son, Patrick, all of Topeka, parents, Donald and Mary Beary of Lenexa, KS, sisters, Maureen McAnarney (Jeff) of Overland Park, KS and Allison Brown (Bill) of Olathe, KS, brother, Michael Beary (Christine) of Leawood, KS, Grandmother, Catherine Beary of Albia, IA, 6 nieces and 1 nephew, Kylee, Kalista, Kolby, Abby, Ainsley, Ryan and Julia.
We love and miss you so much.
Elizabeth will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. Sunday, January 12, at the Porter Funeral Home, 8535 Monrovia, Lenexa, KS where the Rosary will be recited at 4 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, January 13 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 13300 W. 103rd St. in Overland Park, KS. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the American Heart Association or to Safehome.
