Elizabeth Ruth Hunter Amsbaugh, 89, passed away Jan. 15, 2009 at Midland Hospice House. She was born June 9, 1919 in State College, Pa. the daughter of Dr. Charles Axtell Hunter and Bess Hildreth Hunter.
Ruth attended the University of South Dakota for two years and graduated from Washburn University in 1941. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority, the Topeka Junior League, and a member of First Presbyterian Church of Topeka. She married Edward P. Amsbaugh Nov. 27, 1941 in Topeka. He died Jan. 17, 2003.
Ruth was President of Topeka Panhellenic in 1950 and while living in Shreveport, La. was President of Kappa Alpha Theta Alumnae Chapter. She served seven years on the Northeast Kansas Library Board while living in Atchison, Ks. In her later years she was an avid bridge player, becoming a Bronze Life Master in the American Bridge Contract League.
Survivors include a daughter Linda Coy and husband Jim, of Jefferson City, Mo.; a son Stephen Hunter Amsbaugh and wife Marti, Boise, Id.; and a son Charles Robert Amsbaugh and wife Jana, Jefferson City, Mo.; two grandsons, Hunter Amsbaugh and wife Cathy, Dillon, Co.; and Christopher Coy, Jefferson City, Mo; two granddaughters Alisande and husband Pedro Rocha, Los Angeles, Ca.; and Jill Coy, Columbia, Mo. She had three great grandsons, Stone Amsbaugh, Clayton Amsbaugh; and Mason Coy. A memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m., Sat. Jan. 24, 2009 at First Presbyterian Church Chapel, 817 SW Harrison St. Topeka, KS 66612. Private family inurnment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Midland Hospice, 200 SW Frazier Cir. Topeka, KS 66606, the church, or Washburn University Athletic Scholarship Fund, 1700 SW College Ave., Topeka, KS 66621. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is assisting with cremation.
