Nora Lyon passed from this world on December 18, 2005, surrounded by the love of her sister and friends. Words are inadequate to express how much she will be missed.
Nora grew up in West Palm Beach, FL. Her mother was an elementary school teacher and her Father, a college professor. Her parents instilled in Nora and her sister, Carmen, a love of music. Nora was a gifted cellist, and won a music scholarship to the University of Miami.
Following college, Nora joined the Waves. Her military career included service at the Pentagon. While serving in the Waves, Nora met and married Air Force Colonel Charles Lyon.
Colonel Lyon was transferred to Forbes Air Force Base. Nora and Chuck made their permanent home in Topeka.
Always in pursuit of a new adventure, Nora decided to go to court reporting school. Nora was a woman of strong will and determination, as evidenced by the fact that she passed the Certificate of Merit test with a broken finger. She became a highly successful court reporter, and established her own business, Nora Lyon and Associates, in 1980. Nora was a pioneer in the court-reporting field, leading the way in new technologies. She also mentored many young court reporters. Nora also served on the Certified Shorthand Reporters board for several years. She played the court reporter in the movie, "Murder Ordained."
Nora had a wide variety of interests, but an abiding interest in the welfare of animals. At the age of fifteen, she earned enough money to buy her own horse. During Nora's lifetime, she cared for dozens of lost or sick animals. Her own pets included five Irish wolfhounds, cats, fish, turtles, and her beloved parrot, Abby.
Nora is gone from this world physically, but will remain forever in the memories of those who love her. Her legacy will be carried on by "her girls" at Nora Lyon and Associates.
Reflecting her love animals, memorial contributions may be made to Tallgrass Parrot Rescue, P.O. Box 1702, Topeka, KS 66601, or S.C.A.R.S., P.O. Box 22, Auburn, KS 66402.
