Eleanor Elizabeth Simpson, of Topeka, died on July 21, 2006 at the Brewster Place Retirement Community's skilled nursing center of congestive heart failure. She was 81.
Simpson was born on April 1, 1925, in Vermilion, Alta., Canada, the daughter of Bertram John Whitbread and Elizabeth Foulkes Hughes Whitbread. She graduated from the University of Alberta in 1947 with a degree in education and taught for three years in junior high and high schools in Alberta. Simpson married Dr. William Simpson in 1950 and they moved to Topeka in 1950. He died in 2002.
Simpson worked as an activities therapist at the Topeka State Hospital and as a teacher. She earned a master's degree in education from the University of Kansas and worked for many years as a junior high school counselor in the Auburn Washburn School District.
She was active in volunteer service, including involvement in the Children of the World Singing Group, the Interfaith Council's Committee on Race, Operation Crossroads Africa, the Topeka Human Relations Commission's multicultural youth group and Parents Helping Parents. Simpson set up a program for preschool children at the Topeka Rescue Mission and was honored with the JC Penney Golden Rule Award in 1992 for her work to combat child abuse.
Simpson was a member of First Presbyterian Church since 1950, sang in its choir and was a member of the church session.
She is survived by sons David, of Windsor, Ont.; Ian, of Milan, Italy; James, of Seattle, and Dr. Bert Simpson, of Decatur, Tn; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Stanley, of Edmonton, Alta., and Dr. David Whitbread, of of San Bernardino, Calif.
Mrs. Simpson was cremated. In her name, memorial contributions may be given to the Topeka Rescue Mission, 600 N. Kansas Ave., Topeka, Kansas 66608. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
