Eleanor L. Brodie, 87, Topeka, passed away on Sunday, September 21, 2008 at Aldersgate Village.
Eleanor was born August 11, 1921 in Des Moines, IA, the daughter of William and Dorothy (Syrett) Bachelor.
She graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines. During World War II, she worked at a munitions plant. She was the bookkeeper in her family's business, Dixie Carmel Corn Shop, and after working as an underwriter for American States Insurance Company for 28 years, she retired in 1983.
Eleanor was very active as an auxiliary member with the VFW Philip Billard Post #1650 and the American Legion Post 400. She was a member of the Wayside Garden Club and the American Business Women's Association. She was also a great lover of animals.
Eleanor married Eugene Brodie on June 12, 1947 in Des Moines, IA. He died December 23, 1973. She was also preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Helen (Brodie) Lunnon. Survivors include cousin, Pat Saponari, Alpharetta, GA; nieces and nephews, Robert (Kay) Lunnon, Gainesville, TX; Dennis (Paula) Lunnon, Judy (Randy) Jones, and Susie Jones, Topeka; great nieces and nephews; Chrys Paschall, Paradise, TX; Carey Lawson, San Antonio, TX; Kevin Jones and Jennifer Engle, Topeka; Cory Jones, Palmer, AK; Julie Rand, Honolulu, HI; and 15 great-great nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, September 29, 2008 at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. Eleanor will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel after 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 28, 2008 and visitation will be from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. .
