Elbert M. Fly, Jr.

Elbert M. Fly, Jr., 89, Topeka, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002 at a Topeka retirement home.

Elbert M. Fly, Jr., son of Rev. Elbert M. Fly and Elizabeth Maxey Fly, was born March 14, 1913,
in Anson, Kansas. He graduated from Stafford High School in 1931, received an AB in Fine Arts
from Asbury College (Wilmore, KY), a BS in Music Education from Emporia State Teachers'
College, and an MA in Music Education from Kansas State University.

Mr. Fly taught high school vocal music in Norton, KS (1938-41), Manhattan, KS (1941-53), and
at Topeka High School (1953-76). He was also director of church choirs at the First United
Methodist churches in both Manhattan and Topeka. In 1972, Mr. Fly received the Harry Robert
Wilson award for "Outstanding Contribution to the Choral Profession," presented by the Kansas
American Choral Music Association. Following his retirement in 1976, he directed the Topeka
Chamber Singers and continued to be active in his church and the community.

Married in 1940, Elbert and V. Opal Green Fly (d. 1977) had three children. Elbert is survived
by his wife, Stella Kern Fly, whom he married in 1979, and two daughters: Libby Schoeni of
Overland Park, KS and Martha Fly of Kansas City, MO. His son, John Maxey Fly of Dallas, TX,
preceded him in death. Elbert is also survived by 6 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, three
step-children, and 7 step-grandchildren.

Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be 1:00 pm Saturday at First United Methodist
Church. Private inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
