Elaine Sherman Agan passed away Friday, November 6, 2015, in Topeka. She was born March 21, 1925, in Burlington, VT, to the Reverend John Lester and Helen Barrett Sherman. She was the beloved wife of the late Lawrence M. Agan, M.D., whom she married October 14, 1944. Devoted mother of Dick Agan and wife Mary Lanman of Burke, VA; Steve Agan and wife Debbie of Topeka; and Bonnie Agan McBride and companion Edward Costello of Boston, MA. She is a cherished grandmother of seven and great-grandmother of ten. Preceded in death by her brother Paul Sherman; survived by brother John Sherman of Framingham, MA and sister Elodie Sauer of Stockbridge, MA, along with several nieces and nephews. Elaine moved with her husband and older children from Massachusetts to Topeka in 1955, where she enjoyed the past sixty years, while always maintaining her devotion to her native New England. In addition to her family, one of Elaine's greatest interests was tennis, which she played into her mid-70s. She was one of the original members of Wood Valley Racquet Club and was instrumental in beginning a youth tennis program at the Hughes Park tennis courts. Elaine could also frequently be seen bike riding and walking in her Westboro neighborhood. She was an avid sports fan, with a particular interest in KU Basketball and the Kansas City Royals, whose World Series victory she celebrated just days before her death. The family will greet friends from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 10, 2015, at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave, Topeka. A memorial service and inurnment will be held in Bennington, Vermont in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to the Topeka Rescue Mission.
