Eileen Knutson, 90, Topeka, passed away Jan. 24, 2009.
She was born June 21, 1918 in Iowa, the daughter of Clarence and Dovie Marshall Frost. Eileen graduated from Emporia High School in 1936 and became the owner of New Moon Beauty Salon in Hutchinson, KS in 1938. In 1946, she married Sylas T. Knutson. After living in western Kansas, they settled in Topeka. In 1964, they became foster parents. Over the years, they cared for more than 150 children in their home and were recognized by various orginizations as outstanding foster parents. Eileen was a member of Brookwood Covenant Church for over 50 years. She enjoyed being a dedicated wife, homemaker, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents, five siblings, husband, and son, Gregory Knutson.
Survivors include: Children, Judy Smith of Topeka; Carol (Robert) Walker of Tecumseh; Kathy (David) Barkes of Tecumseh; and Craig (Sarah) Knutson of Topeka; Grandchildren, Lisa Smith, Cristen White, Doug Walker, Travis Walker, Jamie Pursley, Scott Barkes, Laurel Haley and Ruby Knutson; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Thursday, January 29, 2009 at Brookwood Covenant Church, 3601 SW 33rd, Topeka, KS 66614. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Topeka. Mrs. Knutson will lie in state after 3 p.m., Wednesday at the Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th, Topeka, where the family will greet friends from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Brookwood Covenant Church or to Susan G.
