Edwin DeWitt Mercer, 65, of Topeka died Friday May 8, 2015.
He was born in Stillwater, Oklahoma, on October 4, 1949. He lived and attended schools in Texas and Kansas. In 1968 he graduated from Medicine Lodge High School.
He was a United States Army veteran who served with the 151st Rangers and the 75th Rangers in Viet Nam. He later served at Fort Carson, Colorado, and at Drake-Edwards Kaserne in Frankfurt, Germany.
After military service he lived in Lingleville, Texas, and barbered in shops he owned and co-owned in Stephenville, Texas: The Majestic Barber Shop and The City Barber Shop.
He attended Washburn University and was one of the founding members of the Topeka Writers group, Table of Eight. He worshipped at the Northside Church of Christ, and he served many years in the prison ministry.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Onecia; and his parents in law, Jim and Carol Pipes; his children Tracy and Tommy Houston and Eddie and Kelly Mercer, the parents of his grandson, Dylan Patrick Mercer.
Ed is also survived by two brothers, Steve and John and his wife Melissa; two sisters, Gloria and Patricia and Patricia's husband Miguel, and 16 nieces and nephews.
He had many interests including traveling, fishing, camping, photography, writing, and music. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He loved working in his yard.
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
