Edwin "Sonny" Heckman, 69, of Topeka, passed away Wednesday, September 19, 2012, at Stormont-Vail Hospital.
Sonny was born May 13, 1943, in Great Bend, Kansas, to Edwin and Alma (Steinert) Heckman. They preceded him in death. He grew up and attended school in Russell, Kansas. He met and married Marilyn (Mohn) Heckman in Russell on Aug 26, 1961 and they had 2 children. Sonny was a member of Painters Local Number 96 and retired from J.F. McGivern, Inc. in 2004. In his spare time he enjoyed restoring old trucks and attending car shows showcasing his grandfather's 1951 Chevy truck, along with going to his grandchildren's ball games.
He is survived by his loving wife; two children, Rich Heckman, of Topeka and Lora (Jim) Utech, and their two children, Emily and Drew Utech, of Shawnee, Kansas; four sisters, Donna (the late Johney) Allen, Carol (Gay) Marker, Kathryn (Jack) Whatley, and Liz (Chuck) Carroll; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, September 24, 2012, at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Street, Topeka, Kansas 66604. Interment will follow at the Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. Sonny will lie in-state at 1:00 pm on Sunday, September 23, 2012, and family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. At Sonny's request casual dress and street rods are encouraged.
