Edwin F. Hailey, 83, Topeka, passed away on Sunday, April 9, 2006 at a local care center.
Ed was born January 10, 1923 in Sabetha, the son of George and Sadie Baumgartner Hailey. He moved to Topeka in 1936 and graduated from Topeka High School.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Upon discharge, he completed his education at Washburn University. Ed lettered in Football, Basketball and Baseball. He later received his Master's Degree from Kansas State University.
Ed taught and coached in the Topeka USD-501 school district for 37 years, primarily at Highland Park High School. He also taught at Overbrook and Burlington.
He married M. "Lorrie" Neilson on November 23, 1945 in Oakland. CA. She passed away on July 27, 1998. Survivors include a daughter, Julie Erickson and husband, Rock, Eskridge; 5 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Glen Hailey, Silver Lake, Larry Hailey, Pennsburg, PA; two sisters, Carol Bethel, Topeka, Janice Fisher, Maumee, OH; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, James and brothers; Donald and Melvin Hailey.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 14, 2006 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Mr. Hailey will lie in state at the funeral home after 2:00 p.m. on Thursday and visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
