Edward Bennett Soule, 79, passed away Thursday, April 23, 2020, after an extended illness.
He was born November 1, 1940 in Kansas City, Kansas, the son of Howard and Olive (Bennett) Soule. He graduated from Wyandotte High School where he was a championship debater and staunch fan of the winning Wyandotte basketball team. He received the B'nai B'rith Youth Award for the greater Kansas City area and was Youth of the Year for the Greater Kansas City United Christian Youth Movement. He attended Washburn University where he continued his outstanding debate career, was senior class president, and graduated with a BA degree in Political Science and a JD degree from Washburn Law School.
As part of his extensive community service, Ed served as Chairman of the Recreation Commission, president of the Family Service and Guidance Center, and secretary of the Topeka Bar Association. He also served as president of the Capital Civitan Club and the Jayhawker Club. He judged debate and forensics for the Kansas High School Activities Association, was president of the Topeka High Booster Club and the Stout PTA, and was treasurer for Children's Hour of Topeka. He served on the District Citizen's Advisory Council to USD 501 and was a member of the Washburn Foundation Board and the Brewster Foundation Board.
He worked as a partner in the Glenn, Cornish and Leuenberger Law Firm and as vice president of Lawyers Title Company. He was an adjunct professor at Washburn University.
Ed was an active member of Central Congregational Church for many years and more recently a member of First Congregational Church. He cherished the fellowship he shared with his Bible Study group.
He was an avid Washburn football and basketball fan and loved spending time walking the Shunga Trail. He was an active supporter of his alma mater and received the Washburn Distinguished Service Award. His many friends remember his intelligence and keen sense of humor. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Ed married Judith E. Stuenkel on June 5, 1965 in Topeka KS. She survives. Other survivors include his daughter, Sharon Soule (Thomas Ruddy), son, Steven Soule (Camille Catalogne), grandchildren Julia and Sean Ruddy, and sister Caroline Hopkins. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A family graveside service will take place at Mount Hope Cemetery, 4700 SW 17th St, Topeka.
