Edward Patrick Mcgill

March 18, 1955 — December 13, 2017

Edward Patrick McGill, 62, of Topeka died Wednesday, December 13, 2017 from COPD and other health issues.

He was born March 18, 1955 in Kingsville, TX, the son of Edward Everett and Martha Ziegler McGill.

After his parents divorce, he lived with his father until age 10 when he came to live with his mother in Topeka.

Edward graduated from Topeka West High School in 1973 with a scholarship to Kansas State University. Early in his first year he suffered a psychiatric break and returned for hospitalization in Topeka. Once stabilized on medication by 1974 he moved to an apartment and went to work for the City of Topeka Traffic Sign and Pavement Marking shop.

In 1977 he resigned to try college again at Washburn University but was unsuccessful. After some months in the Menninger Foundation in 1980, he moved to a farm program in Vermont, returning to the Menninger outpatient program in 1984.

A special thanks to his longtime case manager giver, Ray Padilla; as well as his co-guardian, Dennis Feighny. Thanks also to many caring staff and friends in the community. Thanks to his own courage and determination, Edward lived successfully much of the time in his own apartment. A special thanks to the staff of Brighton Place West where he lived after his health failed.

He is survived by his mother, Martha Senogles of Topeka; brother Kenneth McGill of Milledgeville, GA and sister, Jan McGill-Fowler of Houston, TX.

Edward will lie in state after 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 20 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, 1321 S.W. 10th Ave, where the family will greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. that evening. A funeral service will be held at a later date in Conway Springs, KS with burial to follow in the Conway Springs Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to NAMI Kansas (National Alliance on Mental Illness), PO Box 675 Topeka, KS 66601 or the Topeka Rescue Mission, Inc., PO Box 8350, 600 N. Kansas Ave., Topeka, KS 66608.
