Edward L. Degand, 80, of Topeka, passed away on Friday, April 24, 2009 at Midland Hospice House in Topeka. He was born on December 30, 1928 in Topeka, the son of Joseph P. and Constance Heffner Degand. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. Edward was employed by the Capper Foundation for 6 years from 1945 – 1951. He then went to work for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for 37 years before retiring in June of 1990. He was a member of the American Legion. Edward married Gloria Ann Stewart on December 30, 1969 in Miami, OK. She preceded him in death on January 9, 1999 and he is also preceded in death by his step-son, David S. Laws, a sister Rosemary Fredrick, and two brothers, Kenneth and Eugene Degand. Survivors include one step-daughter, Marion E. Johnston of Topeka, one brother, Ronald J. Degand of Omaha, NE, a sister, Patricia A. Smith of Topeka, two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, all of Topeka.
Edward will lie in state after 2:00 pm and the family will recieve friends between 6:00 and 8:00 pm on Monday, April 27th, at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 28th, 11:00 am, at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel. Rev. Janet Crowl, Midland Hospice Chaplain, will officiate. Burial will follow in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and military honors will be provided by American Legion, Post #1. Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Hospice.
