Edward Emanuel Bauman, 88, of Sidney, Nebraska, died Monday, December 2, 2002, in Topeka, Kansas, where he and his wife Leona have resided for the past year.
Mr. Bauman was born August 31, 1914 in Blue Hill, Nebraska, to Eppo and Margret (Thoeni) Bauman. In 1915, the family moved to Morgan County, Colorado, where he attended grade school and one year of high school.
Mr. Bauman had various farming and mechanic jobs before moving to Sidney in 1943 to work for Heinline Buick as a body repairman. Later, he owned and operated a Studebaker dealership, then Bauman Body Shop until 1972. Afterwards, Mr. Bauman owned and operated a Napa Store until retirement a couple of years later.
Mr. Bauman was a long-time member and board member of the Sidney Chamber of Commerce, and he served eight years on the Sidney City Council. He also served on the Board of Directors of Safeplay Manufacturing of Sidney for a number of years, and was instrumental in forming Sidney's annual Oktoberfest. Mr. Bauman was presented the Aksarben Good Neighbor Award. He helped build the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Sidney in 1950 and was a member there until his death.
In the early 1950's, Mr. Bauman enjoyed stock car racing and was president of the local stock car club. He also enjoyed designing and building numerous floats for the Sidney Days parades. In his later years, he was an avid Scrabble player, a joyful fisherman, and lover of animals.
Mr. Bauman married Leona H. Koepke in 1939 in Fort Morgan, Colorado, his wife of nearly 64 years. A cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, he is survived by Leona, and six children: Sherri Robinson and husband, Jim, of Sidney, Nebraska; Dr. Randy Bauman and wife, Rita, of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Dee (DeLois) Smidt of Topeka, Kansas; Dr. Loren Bauman and wife, Diane, of Lewisville, North Carolina; Mavis Bauman of Sparta, New Jersey; and Dr. Marci Bauman-Bork and husband, Larry, of Topeka, Kansas; one sister, Marie Anderson of Greeley, Colorado; and 17 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren. Mr. Bauman was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Alex, in childhood, and two granddaughters, Brigitta and McKenzie Bork.
Services will be on Friday, December 6, at 2:00 p.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Topeka, Kansas. Memorials may be sent to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 15 & Osage, Sidney, Nebraska, 69162.
Mr. Bauman will lie in state from noon to 9:00 PM December 5, 2002 at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel; Topeka, Kansas
