Edna M. Shaffer

September 1, 1909 — June 11, 2018

Edna Martha Shaffer, thought to be the oldest Kansan at age 108, passed away on Monday June 11, 2018 at McCrite Plaza in Topeka.

Edna was born on September 1, 1909 at her parents' home in Topeka, the daughter of Christian "Chris" and Emma (Koepsel) Schaefer.

She was married to Eugene "Gene" Shaffer on July 8, 1932 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Topeka.

Edna lived most of her life in Topeka, except for a few years during WWII when her husband worked at the bomber plant in Bellevue, Nebraska, and the Shaffers and several other couples helped organize a Lutheran church there. Edna attended St. John's Lutheran School and Washburn High School in Topeka. She worked part-time during Christmas seasons at Hillmer's Leather Store and Groll's Gift and Party Corner. Edna was a lifetime member—and the oldest member ever—of St. John's Lutheran Church, where she was active in the Women's League. She and her husband loved to travel with their church groups, and singing in the New Beginnings Senior Choir. In her later years, Edna enjoyed playing cards and participating in weekly outings with her friends.

She was preceded in death by a son Eugene Lee Shaffer in 1951, a brother Paul in 1966, a brother Albert "Al" in 1979, and her husband in 2002.

Survivors include son Edward "Ed" Shaffer (Carol) of Dallas, Texas, grandchildren Eric Shaffer of Austin, Texas, Amy Richey (Patrick) of Torrance, California, and Beth Shaffer (Carrie) of Austin, Texas, and great-grandchildren Evan and Ethan Shaffer, and Kaja Richey.

Edna will lie in state after 9:00 a.m. on Friday, June 15, 2018 at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 18, 2018 at St. John's Lutheran Church, 901 SW Fillmore, Topeka. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, 6th & Gage, Topeka. The family will receive friends during a visitation one hour prior the service.
