Dr. William O. Martin, 96, of Topeka, died March 8, 2016 at Aldersgate Village after a brief illness.
He was born November 5, 1919 in Wilkinsburg, PA, the son of D. Bruce and Clara Wylie Martin.
He graduated from Geneva College and earned a medical degree from the University of Kansas. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II where he received specialty training in anesthesiology. He practiced anesthesiology at multiple Topeka area hospitals with the majority of his career spent at Stormont Vail Regional Medical Center. He was Medical Director at the American Home Life insurance company for the majority of his professional career. He used his talents in many settings including Geneva College Board of Directors, medical mission trips, and the Red Cross and Lions Club.
Dr. Martin is lovingly remembered by his wife Virginia "Ginny" Martin. He was previously married for 66 years to the late Elizabeth "Betty" Heubner Martin and is survived by their sons, Fredric (Faith), and John (June), his sister Peg Murrell and brother in law Vincent Rocereto, grandchildren Benjamin, Joel, William Martin and Lisa Spence, and eight great-grandchildren.
Dr. Martin will lie in state 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 11, 2016 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, 1321 S.W. 10th Ave., Topeka, KS 66604, where the family will receive friends and relatives from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. that evening. A service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 12, 2016 at the Topeka Reformed Presbyterian Church, 8345 S.W 33rd St. Topeka, KS 66614. Private interment will follow at a later date.
