Dr. William Nathan, of Topeka, passed away Thursday, October 21, 2010.
William Alan Nathan was born on March 24, 1948, in Brooklyn, New York. His parents were Sam and Lila Nathan and they lived downstairs from Aunt Frieda, Uncle Irving, and Cousin Rose. Sam and Irving owned a pharmacy. Bill loved sports, science, and chess. He graduated from Brooklyn Tech (1964) and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (1968) before earning his MD from Albany Medical School in 1973. He did a pediatric residency at Baylor in Houston and studied adult and child psychiatry at the C.F. Menninger School of Psychiatry, graduating in 1978. He played with the children in the preschool, ran long distance, and sang, danced, and wrote lyrics for the Freudian Follies. He worked for 20 years in the Outpatient Department of the Menninger Children's Division and for eight years at Stormont-Vail West. He integrated expert individual and family therapy with cutting edge psychopharmacology, specializing in the long term care of children, adolescents, and adults with disabilities. He trained a generation of child psychiatrists and wrote journal articles and book chapters.
Bill married Sharon Shapiro in 1982 and lovingly supported her efforts to balance family and career. Their daughter Rachel was born in 1983. She was the light of his life. As his movement became more restricted by multiple sclerosis, they played with hamsters, fished, and drove to the stables and to zero hour orchestra. He learned enough from leaving Brooklyn to fully support her moves to Denver and San Francisco, and to rejoice in her engagement to Peter Bawin.
His stroke in May, 2009, too abruptly ended the career and life he loved, and he worked as hard as he could to get them back before dying of complications of his illnesses.
