Dr. Robert T. Cotton, M.D., 90, of Topeka, died Friday, March 12, 2010 at Midland Hospice House in Topeka. He was born on October 5, 1919 in Orlando, FL, the son of Richard T. and Emily Willy Cotton. He obtained a BS degree from Kansas State University in 1941 and attended Cornell University from 1941-1942. He received his medical degree from the University of Kansas Medical School in 1945 where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Dr. Cotton served active duty in the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force, attaining the rank of captain.

He served his residency in Internal Medicine at the Colmery-O'Neil VA Medical Center from 1948-1950. He entered into private practice in partnership with Dr. Robert H. O'Neil in 1956 and retired in 1987. He had hospital appointments at Memorial Hospital, St. Francis Hospital and Stormont-Vail Hospital where he served as staff president from 1969-1970. Dr. Cotton was a member of Phi Kappa Phi fraternity, the Shawnee County Medical Society, the Kansas Medical Society, the American Medical Association, and the Academy of Hospice Physicians. He became a fellow with the American College of Physicians in 1961 and received the Laureate Award in 1990. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he served on various committees and weekly visited hospitalized members. He was also a member of the Fortnightly Club. He was involved as a volunteer with the Marian Clinic for many years and served on the original board and was the medical director for Midland Hospice. He also served on the board of Aldersgate Village. Dr. Cotton was a Boy Scout leader for over 25 years and received the Silver Beaver Award. He served as a volunteer in U.S.D. 501 helping children to read. Dr. Cotton, along with Dr. O'Neil, received Stormont-Vail's Bal Jeffrey Award. He enjoyed woodcarving and was an avid photographer.

Dr. Cotton married Alice N. Roper on April 1, 1946 in Atchison, KS. She survives. Other survivors include two children, Janet E. Cotton Taylor of San Antonio, TX; Don Cotton of San Francisco, CA; two grandchildren, John and Emily; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two children, Richard and Patricia. Memorial services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church. There is parking available in the State parking lot located east of the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Good Samaritan Fund at Aldersgate Village, 7220 SW Asbury Dr., Topeka, KS 66614 or First United Methodist Church, 600 SW Topeka Blvd., Topeka, KS 66603. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
