Dr. Oakley William "Bill" Hall, Jr.
Age 74, passed away at his home December 2, 2003. Dr. Hall was born August 18, 1929 in Herrin, Illinois, the son of Nina Cripps and Oakley William Hall, Sr.
As a young man, Bill Hall, turned down an athletic scholarship to join the service at the end of World War II. He served for 28 years in the active United States Air Force retiring as a Chief Master Sgt (E-9). During his service, Bill traveled to nearly every country in the world and served in World War II, the Berlin Airlift, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam (multiple tours). Bill was a highly decorated veteran and received a Bronze Star while in Vietnam.
While in the service, Bill earned a Bachelors degree from the University of Nebraska and a Masters degree from the University of Oklahoma. Later, he earned his Doctorate in business from Western States University.
After retiring from the Air Force, he became a Realtor in Topeka in 1977. In 1985, Bill founded Alliance Real Estate. Many in the Real Estate community will miss his assistance and cooperation.
Bill was an avid sportsman and enjoyed his finest days in life teaching his children and grandchildren the joys of hunting, fishing and camping. "Honor, Pride, Family, and Education" was more than a motto for Bill. He will be missed by his family and friends.
Bill is survived by his wife of 44 years, Roberta Laflin Hall and was preceded in death by his loving daughter, Lori Lea Hall Smothers. Bill is also survived by his two sons, James J. Hall (Topeka, KS) and Larry R. Hall (Olathe, Ks) and their families. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, as well as his three sisters, Violet Kennedy (Duquoin, IL), Rose Waldrop (St. Louis, MO), and Pansy Jones (Mt. Vernon, IL).
Dr. Hall will lie in state Sunday at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel (10h and Lane) where a visitation with family and friends will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held Monday (1:00 to 3:00 p.m.) at Mount Hope Chapel Garden Mausoleum (17h and Fairlawn). Military Honors will be provided by and Honor Guard from Whiteman AFB. Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Helping Hands Humane Society, 2625 NW Rochester Road, Topeka, KS 66617.
