Dr. Leo F. Wallace, 92, Topeka, passed away on Sunday, November 22, 2009 at Midland Care Hospice House.
Dr. Wallace was born September 24, 1917 in Arma, Kansas, the son of John W. and Grace Mae (Saueressig) Wallace. He grew up in eastern Kansas and graduated from Madison (Kansas) High School in 1934. He graduated from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 1941.
During World War II he served in the South Pacific in the Army Medical Corps.
He was in General practice in Maryville, MO and Glasco, KS, before becoming an Orthopedic Surgeon. He practiced in Burlington, IA, moving to Topeka in 1974 where he worked in the Emergency room at St. Francis Hospital. He later became a consultant for the Social Security Disability Determination Unit, retiring in 1987.
He was a Master Gardener and achieved the level of Emeritus. He was a Life member of Guadalcanal Campaign Veterans, Life member of the 25th Infantry Division Association, a member of the 104th Engineer Combat Battalion, American Legion Post 400, and B.P.O.E. 204. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Topeka Civic Newcomers and participated in several Junquers bus trips. "Mr. Junquers" will be greatly missed.
Dr. Wallace married Mary Ellen Hudson on April 3, 1946 in Kansas City. She died September 8, 2008. Survivors include son, Steven L. Wallace, Lake Jackson, TX; daughters, Sue A. (David) Bruce, Overland Park, KS; Sheryl (Paul) Jones, Springfield, MO; grandsons, L. Cpl. Jack K. Bruce, Okinawa, Japan, and Spc. Jason Bruce, Ft. Drum, NY.
The family wishes to thank all of the staff and Leo's friends at Atria Hearthstone West for everything during the past four years.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at First Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Gardens. Dr. Wallace will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel after 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday and visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Lutheran Church, 1234 SW Fairlawn, Topeka, Kansas 66604.
