James Barron Horne, M.D., died on November 20, 2010, at Saint Francis Hospital.

Jim was born April 11, 1926, in Los Angeles to Ama McCulloch and James Buckingham. He grew up in Evanston, Illinois, with his mother and his adoptive father, Edward Horne. He graduated from Evanston High School in 1944 and was immediately inducted into the U. S. Army. He served as an artillery lineman and forward observer in the European Theater, including the Battle of the Bulge. Upon his discharge from the armed services, he returned to Evanston and graduated from Northwestern University Medical School in 1952. He completed his internship at Denver General and Presbyterian Hospitals. He then served as the general physician for a small community in western Colorado from 1954 until 1960, when he moved to Topeka to complete a psychiatric residency at the Menninger School of Psychiatry, under the leadership of Dr. Karl Menninger.

His professional career as a psychiatrist included serving as Director, Biddle Section, Topeka State Hospital; President, Medical Staff, Topeka State Hospital; Medical Director, Shawnee Community Mental Health Center; Consultant, Unified Court Services of Shawnee County; and completed his career as a Staff Psychiatrist for Colmery-O'Neil VA Medical Center's Viet Nam Stress Treatment Unit which he helped to create. In 1994, Jim was honored by the Shawnee County Allied Tribes at the Intertribal Pow Wow for his service to all veterans and specifically Native American Veterans, and was inducted in to the Gourd Society. Jim was also a long-time member of Topeka Festival Singers, a Shawnee County Extension Services Master Gardener, and enjoyed photography, fishing, and target shooting.

Jim married the woman who became his life-long support and help-mate, Verne Bennett Horne, known as B., in 1952. His daughter Elizabeth Bennett Horne was born in 1953. He will be greatly missed by his wife, his daughter, his two grandchildren, Eleanor Olivia Horne Deumens, 21, and Edward Bennett Horne Deumens, 13, his son-in-law, Erik Deumens, his nieces and nephews, as well as his many dear friends who constituted an extended family in Topeka.

The memorial service will be on Wednesday, November 24, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at First Congregational Church, 1701 SW Collins Ave., Topeka. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Brewster Place Continuing Care Fund, 1205 SW 29th St., Topeka, KS 66611 or the Cat Association of Topeka, 1719 SW Gage Blvd., Topeka, KS 66604. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is assisting with arrangements.
