Dr. Herbert Modlin

Dr. Herbert C. Modlin, 94, Topeka, passed away on Friday, March 30l 2007 at a local care center.

Dr. Modlin grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, the only child of Archer and Elvira Modlin. Before he graduated from high school, he was elected to the National Honor Society and Quill and Scroll. He attended the University of Nebraska where he earned bachelor of science, master of science, and doctor of medicine degrees. He was elected to Sigma Xi, a national society for medical research. In later years he was awarded an honorary doctor of science degree from his alma mater for his "distinguished contribution to the field of medicine."

Dr. Modlin married Mildred Thornton his high school sweetheart in 1933. When she died in 2002, they had been married 69 years. After interning at the University Hospital in Omaha, Dr. Modlin pursued his post-graduate training in neurology and psychiatry in Philadelphia, Boston and Montreal, Canada. Captain Modlin served in the Army Air Force during World War II. He was certified as a specialist by the American Board of Neurology and Psychiatry in 1945.

Dr. Modlin came to Topeka in 1946 and was appointed chief of psychiatric services at Winter General Hospital. In 1949 he joined the staff of the Menninger Clinic where he remained for 45 years. He was director of the residency program, chairman of the Department of Preventive Psychiatry, chairman of the Department of Commnunity Psychiatry.

Dr. Modlin was at various times president of the Group for Advancement of Psychiatry, the American College of Psychoanalysts, and the American Board of Psychiatry and Law; vice-president of the American Psychiatric Association; chairman of the Council on Medical Health of the American Medical Association. He was a member or chairman of committees in the Shawnee County and Kansas Medical Societies.

Dr. Modlin became interested in the overlapping areas of psychiatry and law, and became nationally recognized as a forensic psychiatrist. He lectured at Kansas University, Texas University and Washburn University law schools. He testified as an expert witness in trials from Florida to Kansas; from New York to Alaska. He developed a Department of Psychiatry and Law at Menninger. Dr. Modlin was a prolific researcher and writer, publishing 150 articles, essays and editorials in the medical, legal and lay literature.

Consistent with his long interest in animals, Dr. Modlin volunteered time at the Topeka Zoo, and for several years served as a docent and member of th Board of Directors. Dr. Modlin is survived by his son, Terrence Modlin of Topeka.

Following cremation a private family service will be held.
