Dr. Harry Cook, Jr.

Dr. Harry H. Cook, Jr., 92, passed away Easter Sunday, March 27, 2005 at a Topeka nursing home.
He was born June 10, 1912 in Haven, Kansas the son of Dr. Harry H. and Nell M. Griffitts Cook.
He attended Topeka Public Schools and was a graduate of Washburn University. He was graduated from the University of Missouri at Kansas City, School of Dentistry in 1940 and immediately entered military service in the U.S. Army Dental Corps serving in the South Pacific during World War II until 1945. He remained in the U.S. Army Reserve as a Major until he resigned his commission in December, 1952.
At the conclusion of World War II, Dr. Cook returned to Topeka and practiced oral surgery continuously until December 31, 1982. He was on the active staff at Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center and Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center. He was a past president of the Topeka District Dental Society, Kansas Dental Association, Kansas Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the Midwestern Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He was a Life Fellow of the American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists and the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He was elected Man of the Year in Dentistry in Kansas by the Kansas Dental Association in 1980.
For most of his life Dr. Cook was an accomplished golfer and in 1967 he won the Kansas Senior Invitational Championship.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church and numerous civic organizations including the Arab Temple Shrine, Arab Shrine Boaters' Unit, Scottish Rite, Royal Order of Jesters and Siloam Lodge No. 225 A.F. & A.M.
Dr. Cook was married to Beulah Marie Tilford Cook on June 25, 1938 in Topeka. Mrs. Cook preceded her husband in death on March 4, 1993. His brother Dean Howard Cook also preceded in death on May 20, 1989. Dr. Cook is survived by his son Dr. Harry H. Cook, III and his wife Janis, his step-grandson John H. Hutton and his wife Nikki, and two step-great grandchildren Haley Ann and John Wilson Hutton.
Services will be in Klasse Memorial Chapel at First United Methodist Church on Friday, April 1st at 10:30 A.M. with burial to follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. Dr. Cook will lie in state after 3:00 P.M. Thursday at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel.
