Dr. B. John Ashley Jr. died at his home on Thursday, January 17th. He was 76. He was born June 12th, 1931 in Salem, Oregon, the son of Marie Medsker and Byron John Ashley.
The family moved to Topeka, Kansas in 1932. John attended Randolph and Boswell schools and graduated from Topeka High School in 1949. He attended the University of Kansas, and graduated from KU Medical School in 1956. John interned in Denver, Colorado, where he met, and married Carol Carver, his bride of 50 years, on June 22, 1957. He spent two years as a Flight Surgeon in the USAF. Residency in Ophthalmology followed, at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
He returned to Topeka in 1963 to join his father in private practice. He and Carol raised three sons: Thomas John who joined the practice in 1988 which continues; James Carver who is a financial consultant in Coto de Caza, California; and Steven Andrew, a student who died in 1993. John is also survived by two lovely daughters-in-law: Ann and Serey.
Survivors also include his sisters: Anne Jones, Wichita; and Ruth Logan and her husband, Kenny, of Warner Robins, Georgia. John's life was enriched by his grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, a past member of Rotary International, Phi Gamma Delta, and was a past president of the Topeka Country Club, where his greatest pleasure was golf and tennis with longtime friends. He enjoyed the outdoors whether yard work or skiing or sailing. He was modest, decent, and kind. He was respected by his patients and admired by his many friends, and loved by his family. He will be deeply missed.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 24th at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 4746 SW 21st, Topeka.
