Dr. A.S.Padma Raju

Dr. A.S. Padma Raju, 75, of Topeka, died on Thursday, February 26, 2015 at Stormont-Vail Hospital surrounded by his family and friends.
Padma was born on August 19, 1939 in Bangalore, India the son of A. Siddappa and Sharadamma. He was a graduate of Mysore Medical College in Mysore, India. He immigrated to the United States in 1963 where he finished his general surgery residency in Buffalo, NY. His first years in the U.S. included moves, with his young family, from Buffalo to Great Neck, NJ, Mt. Vernon, MO, Roslyn Heights, NY, Orange, NJ, Brooklyn, NY, and Fort Meade, SD. He finally settled in Topeka in 1973. He worked for the Colmery-O'Neil VA Hospital as well as a private practitioner as a thoracic, vascular, and general surgeon. He retired from medicine in 2008.
Padma was an active member of the community, most notably as the first president of the Indian Association of Topeka and as a founding member of The Gandhian Society. He enjoyed playing bridge and tennis, traveling the world with his wife, great food & drinks with good friends, watching and cheering on all Kansas sports teams, and was a voracious reader of history, philosophy, and politics.
He is survived by his wife, Jaya; daughters, Jyothsna Raju and Tara Raju (Stephen Newman); and grandchildren, Anjali, Nikhil, Avi and Rohan.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 14, 2015 at Topeka Capitol Plaza's Shawnee Room from 5:00 – 7:30 pm. The program will start promptly at 5:15 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Marion Clinic, 1001 SW Garfield Avenue, Topeka, KS 66604 or The Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library, 1515 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka, KS 66604.
