Doyle Henrie

Doyle Henrie passed away July 24, 2006 at the age of 96. Doyle was born in Orangeville, PA on January 21, 1910 to Oscar and Sallie Henrie. Eventually the family consisted of seven brothers, one, Nial, died as a small child. When he was 10 the family moved to the family farm in nearby Fishingcreek Township where Doyle and his brothers attended a one room grade school. He attended high school in Orangeville and graduated in 1928. Doyle worked on the farm and WPA construction projects until 1932 when he and his brother Chick entered the Danville State Hospital School of Nursing on a softball scholarship. He graduated as an RN in 1935 and secured employment at the Institute of Learning, Hartford, CT. It was here that he met Erma and they were married on July 29, 1941 in Winsted, CT. Doyle was drafted into the Army in September 1942 and was assigned as a rifleman until an officer found out that he was a nurse and was move to the Army Medical Corps. He served at several stations in the states and in the Pacific. His unit was preparing for the ground invasion of Japan when the bombs were dropped on Japan. Patricia L Henrie was stillborn when he was stationed in Louisville during 1943. Their second child Betty L Henrie was born in March 1945. He first met his daughter after being discharged from the army in December 1945. He took employment at the Veterans Hospital in Topeka KS. While employed he enrolled at Washburn University and graduated with a BA degree in 1953. The first of his family to accomplish this. He was appointed Director of Nursing Education in 1954, the position he held until his retirement in 1970. He kept active with part time work as lecturer for Marymount College and as Executive Secretary for the Kansas League for Nursing. Doyle and Erma were active members of The First Baptist Church in Topeka, the local VFW, the Topeka Camera Club and did much volunteer work after retirement. He is survived by Grand-daughter Amanda James and husband Chris, Great-grandchildren Kayla and Devin James, son-in-law Kent Henrichs, He leaves behind many nieces and nephews and extended family. He was preceded in death by his wife Erma D (Johnson) daughters Patricia L Henrie, Betty L (Henrie) Henrichs and six brothers. A graveside service for Doyle and Erma will be held at 10:00am on 29 July 2006 at Mount Hope Cemetery in Topeka KA. In place of flowers a memorial has been established at the First Baptist of Topeka, 3033 SW MacVicar Ave, Topeka KS 66611 or the VFW
