Downer Tyler

Downer M. Tyler, 87, of Topeka, passed away on Wednesday, August 24, 2005.

He was born June 19, 1918 in Kirwin, the son of James M. and Nelle Hull Tyler. He had lived in Topeka since 1974.

Mr. Tyler was a rural carrier for the U.S. Postal Service before he retired in 1979, with 30 years of government service. He previously worked as an Administrative Clerk for the FBI for 7 years. After retirement, he worked part-time for the American Lung Association and the U.S. Marshall Service. He was an Army veteran of World War II having served with the U.S. Army First Division, 26th Infantry, where he was wounded at the Invasion of Sicily in July 1943, and received the Purple Heart. Due to wounds received, he was Honorablly Discharged in December 1943.

He was a member of the Frankfort Lodge No.67 AF&AM, where he was Past-Master, Past-Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star; he was a member of Arab Shrine Temple, Topeka and was Past-Commander of the Nemar Shrine Club and the Legion of Honor. He was co-founder of the Legion of Honor of the Shrine in Topeka; Past-Commander of Philip Billare Post No. 1650 of the VFW and Capitol Post No.1 of the American Legion and was Grand Chef DE Gare 40 & 8 of the State of Kansas and a member of the Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 684. Downer was the third person to be both the Commander of the American Legion and VFW in Topeka. He was a member of the Topeka Moose Lodge No. 555 and Eagles Lodge Aerie No. 58. He was a member and former Elder of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church.

Downer was married to the former Georgia Osenbrug on June 14, 1947, at Topeka. She preceded him in death in 2001. Survivors include a son, John Adams and his wife Linda, of Batavia, Illinois and a daughter, Jackie Alligood and her husband, Harold, of Dudley, Georgia; 7 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, August 29, 2005 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Mr. Tyler will lie in state after 2:00 P.M. on Sunday and visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Burial will be in Penwell-Gabel's Memorial Park Cemetery.
