Doug Bass passed away Saturday, June 4, 2022 at Stormont-Vail Hospital.
Doug was born in Topeka, Kansas on June 17, 1945 to Raymond and Maybelle (Draper) Bass.
Doug enjoyed many things- family, hosting large gatherings, coaching baseball and working at McElroy's.
When he coached baseball, his Rough Rider team went to State championships and regional tournaments. He loved to tell stories about "his team". He was a successful and fierce coach. He was always willing to tell anyone how to coach their team-always helpful.
Doug was always willing to help. If anyone called and needed something he was glad to drop everything and assist. He was Property Chairman at Westside Christian Church and gladly continued to help even after he stopped serving in that capacity.
He was an Eagle Scout and was honored to participate recently in the Eagle ceremonies of two of his grandsons.
Doug took great pleasure in restoring a 67 Camaro that belonged to his son Eric. After Eric passed away, Doug's son-in-law Jay and a family friend, Dan Carson, helped him complete the restoration.
Doug enjoyed being a plumber and working at McElroy's. He worked there for over 40 years. The people became a second family to him. He loved swapping stories and telling lies. He loved working in the trade and being involved with Plumbers and Pipefitters Local Union #441. His work with the apprenticeship program meant a great deal to him.
His work family was important, but he loved his family. DNA didn't matter to him. If he loved you that is what was important to him. He is survived by his wife, Pam; his favorite brother, Dennis (Marti) Bass; his daughter, Jenny (Jay) Christman; his step children, Matt (Melinda) Cullen, Raena (Haniero) Ramirez and Greg Anderson; eleven grandchildren; four great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Doug's life was full of many blessings, friends, family gatherings and fun.
A gathering to celebrate Doug's life will be held 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Saturday, June 11, 2022 at the IBEW Local Union #226 Centennial Ball Room, 1620 NW Gage Boulevard, Topeka, Kansas. Please use the North entrance.
In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made to Westside Christian Church; Boy Scouts of America-Scholarship fund; or Plumbers and Pipefitters Local Union #441 Apprenticeship Scholarship.
