Dorothy Shoup

Dorothy Helen Shoup, 86, of rural Scranton, was born June 26, 1921, in Hinsdale, IL to Sherman and Mary A. (Cell) Shoup.

She died January 24, 2008 at Stormont-Vail Hospital.

The sixth of eight children, she attended Rural District #37 (Phelon) School in Osage County, Kansas; graduated from Topeka High School; and received a Master of Music (Piano Major) degree from the University of Kansas.

A life long musician, she performed, composed, directed and taught in Kansas and New Mexico; in the public schools, in college, and in her own studio.

Music, learning, better government and gardening were her absorbing interests. She served four years as an Osage County Commissioner; helped found the Otero Music Association (in New Mexico), and served as chairman of the Osage Music Guild (in Kansas). She belonged to the Topeka Music Teachers Association and the Friends of the Library; as well as the Osage County Historical Society, and was a lifetime member of the Kansas State Historical Society. She held a lifetime teaching certificate from the Music Teachers National Association, and for several years was a member of the Kansas Beekeepers Association.

She was pre-deceased by her parents and siblings - Alfred C. Shoup, George C. Shoup, Charles E. Shoup, Alice C. Snodgrass, John S. Shoup (killed in World War II's Battle of the Bulge mop-up), Robert A. Shoup and Mary E. Blazier. She leaves numerous nieces and nephews in Kansas and elsewhere.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 26, 2008 at Scranton United Methodist Church. Annual dinner benefitting the church follows at 11:00 a.m. Adults $7.00; children 6 to 12, $3.00 and under 5, free.
