Dr. Dorothy F. Rockefeller, 83, died Sunday, July 12, 2009, at Presbyterian Manor in Topeka, Kansas. She was born May 31, 1926 to Adolphus and Stella Clark Thomas in Columbus, Kansas. She married Jack D. Rockefeller on August 31, 1946, and they raised eight children.
She is survived by her husband Jack and her children, Pat Rockefeller and wife Glenda of Lewiston, Idaho; Lois Ann Rockefeller and husband Theron Cole of Abilene, Texas; John Rockefeller and wife Mare of Topeka, Kansas; Tim Rockefeller and wife Mary of McPherson, Kansas; Tom Rockefeller and wife Pera of Spokane, Washington; Jane Kofstad and husband Bob of Woodland, Washington; and Rebecca Rockefeller and husband Joe Reis of La Crescent, Minnesota; a brother, Lloyd Thomas and wife Cathy of Potomac, Maryland; as well as, 22 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Francis Rockefeller, by her two sisters, and by five of her brothers.
Dr. Rockefeller was an educator for 45 years, serving both in the classroom and also as an administrator; she started her career in a rural one-room schoolhouse and was an elementary classroom teacher in Clay Center, Kansas for many years. She served as the Director of Special Services for the Kaw Valley School District for approximately 20 years. She obtained Bachelors and Masters degrees in Education at Kansas State University, and was awarded a Doctorate in Education from Kansas State University in 1984. She served as a Director on the Board of the Educational Credit Union, and she was an active member of a number of state and national educational organizations. She also worked to influence and effect the formulation and passage of special education legislation in the state of Kansas.
Parish rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m. Sat., July 18 at Christ the King Catholic Church followed by Mass of Christian burial at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery.
