Dorothy Moore

Dorothy Jean Stanley Moore died Tuesday, September 17, 2002 at a Topeka care center.

She was born March 3, 1928 to Ernest Ray and Sara Evans (Turrentine) Stanley. A 1946 graduate of Topeka High School she attended Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Dorothy earned her pilot's license in 1946 and was awarded the Women's Aeronautic Association scholarship in 1949. She also received a bachelor's in Recreation from Washburn University later in life.

Dorothy lived in Kansas City, KS for many decades and was a member of the Shawnee United Methodist Church. She worked as a meteorologist, mother, and camp director for the Camp Fire Girls, retiring as an employee of the Social Security Administration. Dorothy was co-founder of the Kansas Trails Council and Johnson County Outdoor Society. She was active in the Swinging Singles Square Dance Club. At age 65, she celebrated her retirement traveling throughout Alaska.

Dorothy married Edwin R. Moore in 1950, they divorced in 1978. She is survived by their five children:(dau)Joyce Hodges, Bonner Springs, KS; (son)Stanley Moore, Lake Jackson, TX;(son) Allen Moore, Joplin, MO;(son)Glen Moore, Linn Valley, KS; and(dau) Sandra Moore, Topeka, KS. Other survivors include a sister Mildred Stanley Ransom, Denver, CO, 11 grandchildren and 5 greatgrandchildren.

Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 21, 2002 in Garden of Faith, Mt. Hope Cemetery. Donations suggested to Appalachian Trail Conference, PO Box 807, Harper's Ferry, WV.25425, or Charitable Care Endowment, United Methodist Homes, Inc., 7220 SW Asbury Drive, Topeka, KS 66614-6059. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
