Dorothy May Harvey, age 89, passed away in her home Sept. 10, 2011, after a lengthy illness. Dorothy worked for Cappers Weekly 32 years and was the editor her last 13 years. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m, Wednesday, Oct. 5, at the Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave, Topeka KS.
Dorothy was the second baby born in the new Memorial Hospital, Bartlesville, OK, on April 3, 1922. Her twin brother Robert was the first. Known as "Nute" by family, she graduated from Bartlesville College High in 1940, participating in band and orchestra. She graduated from Bartlesville Jr. College in 1942.
Dorothy worked for Phillips Petroleum Co. six years in Bartlesville OK before earning a business journalism degree at Oklahoma A & M in 1950. She then worked five years for the Topeka YWCA , serving lastly as Public Relations Director. Dorothy changed her career path to Cappers Weekly 1955 to 1987.
Known for her independence and feisty nature, Dorothy was also an adventurous person. An avid animal lover, Dorothy made at least 7 trips abroad to states in Africa and South Africa to see wild animals in their natural habitats. She was an active member of the Topeka "Friends of the Zoo", and usually went on her safaris with that group. Dorothy was devoted to her cat "Pookie", a home companion of many years.
Dorothy was an accomplished professional and recognized as such by peers. She was a dedicated member of the Topeka Zoo, in Who's Who in America, and the professional chapter of Women in Communications, Topeka. She was in the National Honor Society, high school and college. She was a member of the Lowman United Methodist Church, Topeka.
Survivors are a sister June Harvey Peters, & husband Don, Bartlesville, OK.
Nephew Scott Peters, MD, Oak Ridge TN, wife Carol, children Matt and Megan, niece Nancy Peters Burris, Tulsa, OK and husband Bob, children Whitney & Jake, and several cousins. Dorothy was preceded in death by her mother Vila Harvey, her father Paul Harvey, and twin brother Robert Harvey in March 2010.
The family expresses their deep appreciation to Margo Burson, who lovingly managed her health care affairs, and the Elite Private Care people who provided Dorothy with devoted care during her last illness.
