Dorothy Maxine Winkelman, 91, passed away on Wednesday, November 24, 2010 at Topeka Presbyterian Manor after a lengthy and courageous battle with dementia. She was born March 26, 1919 in Milan, Missouri, the daughter of Thomas Jefferson McEwen and Effie Mae (Baldridge) McEwen.
Dorothy married Clarence N. "Tiny" Winkelman on November 4, 1939 in Des Moines, Iowa. Her family was her life as she participated in her children's activities including school, scouting and church programs. She loved every aspect of homemaking especially cooking, sewing and gardening. Hobbies included decorating and collecting antiques which was evidenced throughout her home. She will be missed by all who loved her. She is survived by daughters, Anna Mae (Leon) Allen, Dodge City; Brenda Strickler, Argyle, Texas; Rita (Jim) Starr, Topeka; and a son, Mark (Susan) Winkelman, Richardson, Texas; grandchildren, Ronald's widow Jane Allen, Dodge City; Randall (Ivalah) Allen, Topeka; Deborah Starr, Topeka; Melissa (K.C.) Shankland, Lawrence; Alan Winkelman, Richardson, TX; and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers Paul and William, sisters Ramah and Mildred, and grandson Ronald Allen.
Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 27, 2010 at Penwell-Gable Cemetery, 6th and Gage in Topeka. Dorothy will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel after 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
