Dorothy Jean Moriarty of Topeka, Kansas, passed from this life to the next on Mar. 21, 2011.
Dorothy was born on Jan. 22, 1929 in Vliets, Kansas, the oldest child of Mayme Belle Heath Hope and Harold E. Hope. Mayme Belle died giving birth to Lonnie, Dorothy's brother. Both died during childbirth. Dorothy and her sisters were raised by Anne and Frank Heath (Grandparents) of Vermillion, Kansas. After attending school in Frankfort and Vermillion, Kansas, Dorothy moved to Topeka to begin working for the State of Kansas. She was a loyal state employee for 35 years before retiring. She worked 2 years for Topeka State Hospital and then moved to Kansas Neurological Institute (KNI) where she worked for 33 years, retiring in 1991. Dorothy was very proud of her service to KNI. She began her employment working on the units with the residents and moved through the ranks to Risk Manager, the position she held at the time of her retirement. She loved the residents and the people she worked with at KNI and was concerned at her passing that serious consideration was being given to closing the hospital that provides valuable services for individuals whose voices cannot be heard.
Dorothy met her husband William John Moriarty (Bill) while he was stationed at Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka, KS. Bill and Dorothy married on Dec. 31, 1952. Three sons, Kevin, Terry, and Shawn completed their family. Dorothy was active in her sons' sporting events and as a Cub Scout den mother for many years. She was also an avid Boston Red Sox fan.
Bill survives as do her sons Kevin and Shawn. Terry died Dec. 26, 1994. Dorothy is also survived by three siblings, Annabelle Rinehart (Mark), Carol Patridge (Ray), and Max Hope. William's surviving siblings are James Moriarty (Carolyn) and Carol O'Neil. William's sister Marilyn Boyer died in 2003. They all considered Dorothy not a sister in law but a sister, the glue that held the family together. Dorothy and Bill have 6 wonderful grandchildren, Colette Eberle (Jason), Colin Moriarty, Jeremy Moriarty, Shannon Moriarty, Kelly Moriarty and Erin Moriarty and one great granddaughter Miranda White. Dorothy is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
