Dorothy I. Piatt passed away at Midland Hospice on July 15, 2006 at the age of 95. Mrs. Piatt was born October 1, 1910 in Topeka. She was the daughter of Franklin Taylor Stephens and Idella Caroline Smith Stephens. She was the great granddaughter of Rhoda Cross who came to Topeka in 1866 and purchased a farm. In 1869, she sold 70 acres to Charles Potwin for
$14, 400. He developed them as Potwin Place. The Cross and Stephens family lived on Stephens Street before its name was changed to Franklin Street.
Mrs. Piatt was a member of the Third Presbyterian Church of Topeka. She married Ernest E. Piatt in 1928. Mr. Piatt was a lieutenant on the Topeka Police Department at the time of his retirement in 1959. He passed away in 1962. Mrs. Piatt later married Fred Boyer, who passed away in 1974.
In her early years, Mrs. Piatt was employed as a comptometer operator in the Topeka office of the Santa Fe Railroad. Later she was employed as a secretary in the Kansas State Highway Department of Transportation for 15 years until she retired in1965. Following her retirement, she was employed by Cable Vision of Topeka for six years.
Mrs. Piatt derived great joy from her yard and flowers, to which she devoted much of her energy in caring for them. She was an accomplished pianist. In her youth she acted as her church's pianist and accompanied groups at the original Topeka High School, from which she graduated in 1927.
Mrs. Piatt is survived by two daughters, Patricia Cowell and her husband, Walter of Pacifica, California, Linda Davis and her husband, Lon of Cincinnati, Ohio, five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
A graveside service for Mrs. Piatt will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 17, 2006 at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery & Mausoleum. She will lie in state after 1:00 p.m., Sunday, at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the American Heart Association, Memorial Processing Center, P.O. Box 1653, Topeka, Kansas 66601-1653.
