Dorothy Ann Simmons Harrison, 88, of Topeka, passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2020.
She was born February 23,1932 in Topeka, Kansas, the daughter of Oscar Raymond and Adah Leila(Rodocker) Simmons. Dorothy graduated from Topeka High School in 1949, and was involved in band, choir, Madrigals, and Pep Club. She continued her education and received a Bachelor's Degree in Music from Washburn University in 1953. While at Washburn, she was a member of the Alpha Phi Soroity.
Dorothy married Charles R. Harrison(Pinky) on July 25,1953 at Grace Episcopal Cathedral. Dorothy and Pinky had known each other since they attended Boswell Junior High in Topeka.
The Harrison's started a family, and they were led to the United States Air Force Military Life, living in Omaha, Nebraska, San Antonio, Texas, and Landstuhl, Germany before returning to their friends and family in Topeka, Kansas.
Dorothy was able to incorporate her love for children and music as a Band Teacher for 40 years. The majority of her career was teaching Elementary Band with USD 501 School District as a traveling teacher which allowed her to be involved in many communities in Topeka. She absolutely loved her career.
Dorothy played flute in The Topeka Symphony, was a member of The Topeka Junior League, and a member of the Grace Cathedral Choir, Bell Group, and instructed the Youth Bell Group. She also taught private flute lessons at home.
Dorothy retired at age 62, and enjoyed gardening, going to many Grandchildren's sporting events, and playing Bridge.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Charles R. Harrison(July 16, 2000). Survivors include her sister, Donna Hinshaw, a son; Charles Harrison(Laurie), and daughters; Anne Harrison(Tom), and Amy Knight(Don), grandchildren; Erin Knight Walkenshaw(Craig), Tyler Knight(Cierra), Max Harrison(Stephanie), Rex Harrison, and Esme Harrison, great grandchildren; Benjamin Walkenshaw, and Drew Walkenshaw.
Dorothy was a beautiful soul and will be missed by many. A special thank you to Wilma Anderson(Lawrence, Kansas), Douglas County VNA Hospice, and Brandon Woods at Alvamar.
