Doris Rose Tarnower

November 10, 1925 — November 12, 2017

Doris Rose Tarnower (nee Sheen) was born November 10, 1925, and passed on November 12, 2017 at her home in Aldersgate Village, Topeka Kansas.

Born in Union Grove, Wisconsin to Eva Kathryn (Huck) and Howard Sheen, she joined the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps and came to Topeka. Here she met and married William Tarnower in 1951, and they raised four children.

In her happy, quiet life she was a supportive and loving wife and mother; while serving as a kind and compassionate community member and volunteer, a member of sewing group and the Roundettes, and a fun companion to her friends. She was an advocate for and rooted for the underdog in sports, as in life. She always had a little mischief in her and a smile to share. She followed tennis and politics religiously, enjoyed movies, and had a passion for playing bridge right through to her last day. One of her favorite songs was Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World," which was her theme for how she viewed the world, other people, and life in general.

Doris was preceded in death by her father, whom she lost early in a tragic accident in which she was his two-year old travel companion. She also lost her mother Eva Sheen, brothers Robert and James Sheen, sister Kathryn VanHook, husband William Tarnower (1994), and a daughter Eva Williams. Survivors include her son William Peter Tarnower, daughters Jean Ellen Vieux/spouse Baxter Vieux, and Amy Claire Tarnower Oczon/spouse Arnel Oczon, seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

A memorial gathering will be held Sunday, December 10th at 1pm, Aldersgate Village, Wesley Hall. A graveside gathering on Saturday, December 9th will be at 1pm at Mount Hope Cemetery.

The family asks that in lieu of sending flowers, donations be made to the American Diabetes Association.
