Doris Taber, 95, formerly of Topeka, KS, passed away at Pioneer Ridge Care Center in Lawrence, KS on January 30, 2018.
She was born April 2, 1922 in Atchison, KS to Walter H.G. and Ella (Peterson) Tschorn. She graduated from Atchison High School in 1941. Mrs. Taber entered nursing training in Leavenworth, KS and became an RN. She volunteered to work for the VA during World War II and went to Battle Creek, MI for duty. It was there that she met her husband Thomas E. Taber. They were married on September 6, 1946. Mrs. Taber was a nurse at Christ Hospital/Stormont Vail Hospital. She began her career in Labor and Delivery and later moved to the newborn nursery. Mrs. Taber helped Stormont establish the first NICU in Topeka and was active in promoting Lamaze and breast-feeding. She retired in July 1983 after 37 years of service.
Mrs. Taber was preceded in death by her husband Thomas, her parents, her sister, Christine Lott, and many friends and colleagues.
Survivors include her son John Taber (Carrie), of Lawrence and one grandson, Thomas. She is also survived by a brother, Walter H. Tschorn, Jr. of Fairlawn, NJ, three nephews, Melvin Lott of Weston, MO, Don Davis, of Walter's, OK, and Jerry Taber, of Sacramento, CA; as well as three nieces, Kristin Purdy of Atchison, KS, Elizabeth Williams of Alpharetta, GA, and Amy Madere of Fayetteville, GA. She is also survived by many grand nieces and nephews, great-grand nieces and nephews, and very dear friends of the family.
Mrs. Taber was a Life Member of the order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of First Lutheran Church. Mrs. Taber dearly loved her family and her friends and the friends of her son. She enjoyed trips with her family and Saturday night dinners at McFarland's Restaurant.
She lived a good, long, Christian life. Her family and friends feel blessed to have been a part of her life, and now she is home with God. The family would like to thank the caring staff at Pioneer Ridge and Stormont Vail for the care Mrs. Taber received and a special thanks to the Douglas County Visiting Nurses.
The family will receive friends during a visitation from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka.
Memorial contributions in Mrs. Taber's honor may be directed to First Lutheran Church of Topeka and the Douglas County Visiting Nurses Association.
